Does child sponsorship really work?
Yes! By sponsoring a child, you are helping to provide the
very basics of life that we take for granted like food,
shelter, medical care, education and love. Through
sponsorship, they have a chance to grow up strong and
confident - getting the love, care and skills they need to
become productive citizens of Honduras
How
are children chosen for sponsorship?
Orphaned or abandoned children come to us through government
referral, friends and neighbours, or the prison system.
Working with Honduran social workers, Friends accepts full
guardianship of the child through legal channels.
Will
I be my child's only sponsor?
No. Our program relies on a Safety Net of Supporters - a 4:1
ratio of Canadian sponsors to Honduran Children. By doing
this, we can fully assume the cost of supporting every facet
of a child's life without overburdening our sponsors.
How
long will my sponsorship last?
Many of our children will be in our care until they are 18 so
we encourage you to consider sponsorship a long term
commitment. Should your child leave the program for any
reason, we will be happy to provide you with another child to
sponsor. Should you be unable to continue your sponsorship
payments, we will work with you to find the best option.
Can
I sponsor more than one child?
Yes! How many children you sponsor is completely up
to you. It's dependant only on your financial resources.
Can
I send my sponsored child a gift?
We do not recommend that you send parcels in the
mail to Honduras. If you wish to send a gift, forward the
money to Friends with an indication of whom it is for and what
you would like to purchase. The money is then sent to our
partner in Honduras and a gift is purchased for the child
there.
Can
I write or visit my sponsored child?
Yes! We strongly encourage you to correspond with or visit
your child. For visits, please contact us in advance so that
we can help you make the necessary arrangements.
Can
I adopt my sponsored child or bring them to Canada?
No. Our goal is to help our children become confident and
self-reliant so that one day, they will be productive citizens
of Honduras. Adoption is also time consuming and very
expensive. For this reason, Friends does not encourage
sponsors to attempt to adopt their sponsored children.
