In a developing nation like Honduras, an education
can be a child's only chance to escape a life of
poverty. Unfortunately for many of its poorest
families, the high cost to send a child to school
is an insurmountable obstacle. And yet without it,
the most basic necessities of life - food,
clothing, housing and medical care - may be
forever beyond their means.
At
a few hundred dollars per year including school
fees, books, uniforms and travel, the cost to send
a Honduran child to school can seem like an
insignificant amount to most Canadians. With an
average monthly income of only $130-$150 US per
month however, for many Hondurans it's an
impossible dream to send one child to school, let
alone more than one.
Friends
of Honduran Children is making a difference in the
lives of poor students through the creation of a
high school scholarship fund. With the support of
our donors, worthy young adults are supported as
they achieve a high school education, something
that will set them on the path for a
self-sufficient and fulfilling life. Most
importantly, something they can not achieve
without our help. In the future, an Endowment Fund
will allow us to offer this help to future
generations of Honduran high school students
indefinitely.
